Abstract
The Indian information technology industry is making its mark on the world scene and it is widely believed that India will emerge as a major software developer. The driving force behind this growth is the availability of a vast pool of highly qualified and bright professionals. This paper discusses the changing nature of the pool of professionals made available through a variety of educational programs. It also includes a discussion of the types of products developed by the Indian information technology industry and the nature of information technology research.

The paper concludes that the demand for professionals is having a significant effect on Indian employment patterns. However, the situation is expected to change as the number of graduates rises to meet demand. In some cases such a rapid expansion has led to the erosion of the quality of education. The paper also concludes that there is a clear pattern of evolution of the Indian computer industry. The software industry, which started as a supplier of programmers to the western world, is showing signs of maturity. However, progress is slow. Supplying programmers to the western world remains a significant activity. However, the need for serving the domestic industry is also being recognized.
