Just like Microsoft Windows, the Linux operating system has a windowing system called, simply, X (or X-Window, or X-Windows). To access this windowing system from another system (Microsoft Windows, say), you need an "X-Window emulator". The one we use is called XWin32, and it is available from any PC in any lab on campus.

Different "Desktops" are possible when using X. "Gnome" and "KDE" are two of the more elaborate common ones, while "fluxbox" and "sapphire" are simpler ones. Wewill discuss which one should be used in our case when the time comes.
