SPARK Module on Managing Stress and Mental Health

Our lab this week is different from the usual. Instead of programming, we're going to be talking about mental health.

The material in this lab will not be covered on M2 or the final exam.

Stress is a normal part of the university student experience. I'm sure all of you have felt at least a bit of stress at some point during the term. Some of you may have felt stressed for most of the term. You should expect to feel more stress as you progress towards graduation. It's important to be aware of your mental state, and know what resources are available to you to help you maintain (or return to) a good mental state.

In order to help you deal with stress, we are providing you with the Managing Stress and Mental Health module from the SMU Spark First Year Experience course. You have probably already seen one or more Spark modules in your other science courses. The goal is "to support you with your transition into and through SMU's learning environment and scholarly culture." This module is to help you get "through". We hope that you will find something helpful in this material, even if you never feel the need to take advantage of the resources provided.

Your grade for this lab/module will be based on a 14-question quiz on the material in it. It will not depend on your answers to any of the activities in the module. In fact, we will not have access to your responses in the module, except for those that you publish yourself (and those are published anonymously).

The module is available here.

The quiz based on the module is available here.

You can complete the quiz as many times as you like. Your final attempt will be the lab grade, added directly to your lab grade jar.

Remember that you are allowed to miss multiple labs without penalty. There are two more labs (28 points) left after this one. If you already have 72 or more points, you can skip this lab and still get 100 points on the lab component of the course. If you already have 100 points (that is possible), then you are free to skip all remaining labs.
