Overcoming Browser Default Styles

All browsers will make use of a set of default styles for most HTML elements. The trouble is, these defaults are not the same for all browsers. To achieve a consistent look for your site across all browsers, it is a good idea to make use of a "CSS Reset" to remove all browser defaults, and then explicitly set the values you want for any CSS properties that your site uses.

The DOCTYPE

Note that without a correct DOCTYPE as the first line, a browser may switch into "quirks mode".
