Important Notes on the Grading Scheme

  1. Students will work in teams of two (with adjustments as necessary if the number of students enrolled is odd, or one or more students drop the course along the way). Each team will be expected to develop a functional website that satisfies the specifications provided as the course progresses. Feedback will be provided along the way, but it will be the final version of the website that will be evaluated for 40% of the course grade. During the last lecture/lab session, each team will be required to present and demo their website and the presentation will be considered in the evaluation of the website portion of the course grade. Teams may also be required to do a "progress presentation" at one or more points during the term.
  2. There will be no "mid-term" in the usual sense. Instead there will be periodic quizzes and activities during the term that will count toward the grade. These quizzes and activities will not all have the same weight relative to the course grade, but the points achieved on the quizzes will accumulate and the total will count for 20% of the overall grade for the course as follows: Whoever achieves the highest total will be given the full 20% for that portion of the course. Everyone else will receive whatever percentage of the 20% that is equivalent to their percentage of points achieved relative to the highest total.
  3. The length of the final exam will be the longer of the following two times:
  4. The total numerical grade determined on the basis of the percentages in the above table will be the key factor, but not the only factor, in assigning a final letter grade for the course. A passing grade for the course may not be given if a student has clearly not made an honest effort to complete all parts of the course, so any student who ignores any significant portion of the required work or fails to contribute significantly to the development of the team website does so at his or her own peril.
  5. Attendance, although it is not allotted any direct point value, is also regarded as important, and students are expected to be aware of whatever is covered in class.
  6. Actual letter grades will be assigned according to the scheme outlined in the university calendar, and based on the numerical total calculated according to the above table.
